BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Attention 4th, 5th and 6th Graders and Parents,

You are invited to participate in St. Michael’s Battle of the Books. This program involves students forming teams, reading pre-selected titles and competing against other teams for prizes in a quiz bowl type contest. This program is an exciting way to promote reading and help children discover new literature!

The Battle of the Books takes place the evening of Wednesday, March 19, 2025 in the school gym.  The Kickoff will be in the school library on Monday, December 16, 2024 during lunch.

Battle of the Books 2025 Registration Form

NOVEMBER:  Students form teams

DECEMBER to FEBRUARY:  Teams read 8 awesome books

MARCH:  Teams compete for one night in the gym

Here’s how the program works:

Interested students can begin forming teams of 6-8 students.  If needed, I can help you put together a team. There is room for all interested students to participate in this program. If you don’t have a team, then you will be placed on a team.

Each student who wishes to participate must have a parent/guardian register them.  Each team must also recruit a Coach to read the selected titles and help the team prepare for the Battle.  All Coaches must complete the “Protecting God’s Children” Training/Background Check.

All students must be registered no later than Friday, November 22, 2024. Each coach will be contacted once they are registered and teams have been formed.

Teams will meet in the school library on Monday, December 16, 2024 during lunchtime. The books will be passed out and the program will officially begin. Coaches need not be present at this time, but if you are able to attend, it is very helpful. Each participating team will receive one complete set of books. The team may circulate these books among themselves. All of the titles are also available at local libraries and area bookstores. Once the program kicks off, the students will be reading their books and working with teammates and Coaches to prepare themselves to answer questions about the books. The Coach will organize occasional team meetings to discuss the books with the team members, talk about strategies for answering questions and otherwise help them prepare for the Battle on March 19, 2025.

Battle of the Books FAQ’s

What is it?

The students in grades 4-6 sign up and teams of 6-8 students are formed. A battle will take place against all the teams in March.  The teams are encouraged to come in costume and each team makes a poster that is put up in the cafeteria. The actual battle takes place in the gym where teams sit in groups on the floor and write answers to questions. Three questions from each book will be asked.  Each team will write down an answer and provide the author’s last name.  Points are awarded for correct answers and prizes are given to the top teams.

What do we read?

On December 16th, teams will go to the library to pick up copies of the 8 books they will read. This is an exciting event because no one knows what the titles will be. Each team is responsible for reading all the books and knowing how to spell the last name of the author. It is recommended that each team member read at least 2 books, but they can read as many as they like.

When do we meet?

Teams should start meeting in January.  Day, time, location and frequency is up to each individual Coach. Some teams meet weekly, some bi-weekly, some monthly.  In the past, teams have met after school, during lunch or on the weekends.

What do we do at meetings?

The team can discuss the books and quiz each other on the books.  Coaches can make questions and/or ask the students to make questions.  Additionally, some questions are available online, from past battles, sharing with other coaches or asking

parents on the team to make questions for books.
