Parent Volunteering

"As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace." 1 Peter 4:10

St. Michael the Archangel prides itself on all the excellent programs and events we provide for our students, families, and community. To make these events and programs a success, we need volunteers. Volunteering helps strengthen our community, support our youth, and improve our school and parish.

Protecting God's Children
Volunteers must complete Protecting God's Children Workshop to participate in events that include children. The Archdiocese of Detroit has mandated a newly updated training course for Protecting God’s Children for any parent volunteer who received their initial training prior to 2020.  All parents must be up-to-date with this training in order to volunteer with students–be it in the classroom, as a coach, as a field trip driver, etc.  If you need to take this training (which is done online and lasts about 2 hours), please complete it and send your printed certificate to Mrs. Liptak as soon as you can.  http://virtusonline.org/virtus/

We are in need of volunteers to help with help with childcare on March 14 from 5:45 - 8:45 pm in the cafeteria. This opportunity is to open for high school students, college students, and adults, which would count toward the family hours. If you are interested please email Lauren Waligora at [email protected]
Logging Volunteer Hours
We ask our parents to log their completed volunteer hours in our FACTS portal. For the 2023/2024 school year, we ask that families complete a minimum of 15 hours, 8 hours for single-parent families by June 1. Please follow the Volunteer Logging Hours Directions and reference the Volunteer Service Opportunities (VSO) list for assistance in logging completed hours properly. If there is an event or role that is not on the Volunteer Service Opportunities, please submit a review to [email protected]

FAQ:
Q. Who is logging in hours?
A. We ask all of our parents/guardians in preschool to 8th grade to log completed volunteer hours in our FACTS portal. Each parent/guardian has his or her own FACTS login. Please Note: Student volunteer hours are not to be logged. 8th-grade student volunteers will continue their own separate standard practice.

Q. I signed up for an event or volunteer opportunity that is coming up. Can I enter my hours?
A. We ask you to please enter only the completed hours after the volunteering is complete.

Q.  Does grandparents' volunteering count?
 A.  Yes! You can log the grandparent volunteer hours under your account. In the note section, we ask that in the note section add that a grandparent volunteered along with their name for verification. Please note: Grandparents attending an event as guests are omitted.

Q. Do monetary donations count?
A. As we are extremely appreciative of monetary donations, we are only looking to log in hours of physical volunteering.

Q. What happens if I sign up for volunteering and the event is canceled/rescheduled?
A. We are thankful that you signed up! If the event was canceled on our behalf, please enter 1 hour of service. We will check the sign-up sheets or confirm with the Parent/Teacher lead to verify that you signed up as a volunteer for that event. If the event was rescheduled, please log the completed volunteer hours from the rescheduled date. If the rescheduled date does not work for your schedule, please only log 1 hour.

Q. What happens if I sign up for volunteering and I can't attend due to unforeseen circumstances?
A. If an unforeseen circumstance causes you not to come, you cannot log any hours. If the event was rescheduled or canceled on our behalf, please see the directions above on how to handle it.

Q. Does parish volunteering count?
A. Yes! Volunteering for liturgical ministries, parish events, MOPS childcare, and other programs does count. Please Note: Attending an event or a program is omitted from volunteer hours.

Q. Where can I find a list of upcoming volunteers that are needed?
A. You can find the links to our upcoming volunteer needs in the link buttons at the top of this page. Also, keep an eye out for emails, social media posts, and the bulletin from the school/parish.

Q. Can extra completed hours roll into the following year?
A. We are appreciative that you volunteered. All hours completed will remain within that school calendar year. It would not roll over.

Q. I am a coach and/or Parent Group/School Committee/8th Grade Committee/Event Committee member. Do I need to enter a log for each practice/game/meeting?
A. No. To alleviate all the extra work on your behalf, we ask you to please enter your total hours completed in one entry at the end of the season, event, or school year. For example, Coaches will have 1 log entry for the total hours of practices and games for the season, School Committee and Parent Group members will have 1 log entry for the total hours of meeting hours for the school year, Event Chairs and committee will have 1 log entry for the total hours of planning, prepping, and day of event hours.

Q. What happens if I do not see my event or volunteer opportunity listed on the VSO?
A.  Please submit which event or opportunity for review to [email protected]
