Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl Team
Quiz Bowl is a team competition that tests your knowledge of all academic disciplines as well as pop culture and sports. Two teams of four students compete against each other with a lockout buzzer system. A moderator reads questions and students “buzz” in. If they answer correctly, they earn points for their team. All 6th-8th graders are eligible to participate ($30 registration fee). Participants can choose between the 7:00 AM or 3:15 PM practice times located in Room 217. Area schools take turns hosting tournaments on Saturdays (about four per year). St. Michael will host the annual Blessed Angela Quiz Tournament (BAQT). Many of our QB alumni return to help out at this tournament as moderators and scorekeepers.
Quiz Bowl has a long history at SMA, beginning around 2001 under the leadership of Mr. Paul Krys. Since joining NAQT in 2011, we have had a very successful program. Currently, we have an overall record of 644-474 (57.6%) total games. We qualified each year for the Middle School National Championship Tournament from 2012 until this year, before Covid interrupted, and then qualified again in 2022 until this year.
Our 2017 squad qualified for the MSNCT early by taking all three top spots at the Holt Middle School Invitational in November. That earned us a spot as a NAQT Team of the Week. In 2014, we brought home a State Championship. That same year, our B Team finished as runner-up. We finished in second place in the State Tournament in 2019 and 2022. We were the NAQT Team of the Week in 2025.
Many of our players continue on in high school Quiz Bowl at Divine Child and Detroit Catholic Central.
